Contemporary art by MatWay - based in Denmark

MatWay (Matvey Slavin) (b. 1987, Saint Petersburg) is a German-Danish painter based in Copenhagen. He graduated from the University of Fine Arts Hamburg in 2015 after studies in Vienna and Hamburg.

Since 2013, he has developed Neograttage, an incision-based method in wet acrylic through which the image emerges by removal. Each intervention remains materially inscribed, defining painting as a tactile and temporal process.

His ongoing series Golden Age explores figuration within structured compositions, where relief, gesture, and historical reference converge.

His work has been exhibited widely across Germany and Denmark, including Kunsthal Aarhus, Kunsthal Vejle, JANUS – Vestjyllands Kunstmuseum, Museet på Koldinghus, and Gammelgaard Kunst- og Kulturcenter.

Member of Billedkunstnernes Forbund and Corner.
